A Landmark in American Climbing History
Tahquitz Rock—also known as Lily Rock—has helped shape American rock climbing for nearly a century. The first ascent of The Trough (5.4) was completed in 1936, and the area soon became a proving ground for increasingly difficult free climbing. The grading language now known as the Yosemite Decimal System was actually created here at Tahquitz, above Idyllwild—not in Yosemite. Royal Robbins, Don Wilson, and Chuck Wilts developed the Tahquitz Decimal System to describe route difficulty, and included the 5.0-to-5.9 scale in their landmark 1956 guidebook. The system was later adopted and expanded in Yosemite, eventually taking the name by which it is known today. The climbs themselves repeatedly pushed beyond the scale’s limits: Royal Robbins and Don Wilson’s 1952 free ascent of Open Book became the benchmark 5.9, then considered the top of the system, while later routes broke through that ceiling. At nearby Suicide Rock, Valhalla (5.11a), first climbed in 1970, became a celebrated test piece for a new generation. Paisano Overhang carried that progression even further. Pat Callis and Charlie Raymond completed its first ascent with aid in 1968; in 1973, John Long made the first free ascent of the severely overhanging offwidth, now rated 5.12c. At the time, it was among the hardest free climbs in the United States—and possibly the world—and its ascent helped firmly establish 5.12 as a meaningful new level in American climbing. From 5.9 through 5.10, 5.11, and 5.12, Idyllwild’s climbers and routes proved that the decimal system needed to remain open-ended. Climbing here is more than a day on the rock—it is a chance to move through the living history of both American free climbing and the grading system climbers still use today.
Climbing for Every Level
Idyllwild is an exceptional destination for beginner and intermediate climbers, as well as experienced climbers ready to push into more advanced terrain. Beginners can learn movement, knots, belaying, communication, and efficient footwork on approachable routes selected for the group, while intermediate climbers can refine crack, face, and slab technique, practice gear placement, improve anchor systems, and prepare for longer objectives. Tahquitz is also one of Southern California’s premier multi-pitch destinations, with sweeping granite faces rising roughly 1,000 feet above the forest. Classics such as The Trough (5.4) and White Maiden’s Walkway (5.4) are excellent entry-level multi-pitch climbs, giving newer climbers the opportunity to experience exposure, longer routes, and the rhythm of moving together through several pitches. More experienced climbers will find rewarding challenges on Whodunit (5.9), The Open Book (5.9), Traitor Horn (5.8), and Super Pooper (5.10b), along with advanced classics such as The Vampire (5.11a). Together, these routes make Idyllwild a place where climbers can build skills at a comfortable pace, progress toward greater independence, and continue into demanding objectives featuring sustained movement, technical climbing, exposure, and complex route-finding. A guided day with Chillino Rock Climbing is matched to each guest’s ability, conditions, and goals—whether the objective is learning the fundamentals, completing a first multi-pitch climb, or stepping onto an advanced classic.
